Autobiographia Literaria by Frank O’Hara

I like this poem because I can’t decide if it’s tongue-in-cheek, or if it’s mostly true. It’s the kind of poem that makes me laugh on the first reading, but makes me think afterward. It also makes me wonder that if a person is happy at one point in his/her life, that the sad things that happened in the past don’t matter so much.

Autobiographia Literaria
By Frank O’Hara

When I was a child
I played by myself in a
corner of the schoolyard
all alone.

I hated dolls and I
hated games, animals were
not friendly and birds
flew away.

If anyone was looking
for me I hid behind a
tree and cried out “I am
an orphan.”

And here I am, the
center of all beauty!
writing these poems!
Imagine!
