A Dream Deferred by Langston Hughes
I remember that we read this my sophomore year in HS when we read Hansberry’s Raisin in the Sun. I don’t really remember how much I liked the play, or the poem for that matter. Now that I read the poem again, though, I do quite like it.
A Dream Deferred
By Langston Hughes
What happens to a dream deferred?
Does it dry up
Like a raisin in the sun?
Or fester like a sore—
And then run?
Does it stink like rotten meat?
Or crust and sugar over—
like a syrupy sweet?
Maybe it just sags
like a heavy load.
Or does it explode?
